Travel to Makassar

Makassar, is the provincial capital of South Sulawesi, Indonesia, and the largest city on Sulawesi Island. From 1971 to 1999, the city was formally named Ujung Pandang, after a precolonial fort in the city, and the two names are often used interchangeably. Its area is 175.77 km2 and has population of 1.25 million.

Transportation

Makassar has a public transportation system called "pete-pete". A pete-pete (known elsewhere in Indonesia as angkot) is a mini-bus that has been modified to carry passengers. The route of Makassar's pete-petes is denoted by the letter on the windshield. Makassar is famous for their "becak" (pedicab) which is smaller than the "becak" in the island of Java. In Makassar, people who drive pedicab are called Daeng. The city airport is Hasanuddin International Airport which is actually located outside the Makassar city administration area. It is formally located in the regency of Maros. In addition to "becak" and "pete-pete", the city has government-run bus system, and taxis.

There are some notable of landmarks around the city. From the old 16th century fort which built by the Dutch Colonial government:Fort Rotterdam to the third largest indoor theme park in the world: Trans Studio Makassar and the first ever underground shopping mall in Indonesia: Karebosi Link.

The theme park was created by a joint company between Trans TV, an Indonesian TV company, and Jusuf Kalla (Indonesia's ex-vice president) company (Kalla Group). Beside the Theme Park, it also has a Resort, a Marina, a Bank Office, an Exclusive Shopping Mall which will be completed around 2012. The theme park is located in Tanjung Bunga. How to Reach Makassar?
The easiest and most recommended way to reach Makassar is through air flight transport. There are varieties of low cost airline service which provide multiple routes to reach Makassar from various departure point. Airlines such as Merpati Nusantara AirlinesLion AirBatavia Air, and Sriwijaya Air are quite competitive in providing affordable economic flight ticketing fare. (other such as Garuda Indonesia usually offer quite more expensive price but with extra services and more convenient traveling experience). These price rates, however, can fluctuate accordingly to the time you book your seat. At low season period, flight rate from Javanese area to Makassar can vary between  Rp. 400,000 to Rp. 700,000. Rp. 800,000 to over Rp. 1 million would be considered as reasonable price at high season when travels reaches their most active frequency. As for areas in eastern Indonesia, the needed expenditure to cover your travel budgeting in low season would range between Rp. 300.000 to Rp. 600.000 for one way flight depends on how far is your location to the city. At high season, however, the rate would similarly soar quite unpredictably.

Additionally, for those who might want to tighten their budget on travel and, at the same time, enjoy longer timespan travelling on board, there are a lot of ship transport services which provide a variety of fares.

As the dates for IVED 2011 have already been fixed, we highly recommend you to purchase your flight ticketing as early as possible to avoid getting overpriced seats. We're looking forward to see you all here to experience MAKASSAR!
